Living with a living material
Oiled solid wood is alive to its surroundings. A little care, now and then, and it only deepens with the years.
A Haussmann piece is finished in oil, not lacquer — which means the wood can still breathe, darken and mellow with time. Treated kindly, it doesn't wear out so much as grow into itself.
Everyday care
Wipe spills as they happen and keep the piece out of direct, all-day sun. A soft, slightly damp cloth is all it takes for dusting; harsh cleaners and silicone polishes do more harm than good.
A coat of oil, now and then
Once or twice a year — or whenever the surface starts to look thirsty — rub in a thin coat of natural furniture oil and let it dry. It feeds the grain, evens the colour, and quietly erases the small marks of daily life.
Marks are memory
Checking, grain, the faint ring from a warm cup — none of it is damage. Solid wood carries its history on its surface, and a piece that has been lived with is more beautiful, not less.
